World Cerebral Palsy Day: Celebrating Unique Lives, United in Support

6th October 2025

Today marks World Cerebral Palsy Day—a global movement that brings together 50 million people living with cerebral palsy, their families, carers, and communities. It's a day to celebrate achievements, challenge barriers, and advocate for a more inclusive world.

This year's theme, "Unique and United", captures something we see every day at Ashton Care: every person we support has their own story, their own strengths, and their own way of living life to the fullest.

What is Cerebral Palsy?

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of conditions affecting movement, posture, and coordination. It's caused by damage to the developing brain, usually before or during birth, or in early childhood. CP affects everyone differently—some people may have mild mobility challenges, while others require more comprehensive support.

What's important to understand is that CP doesn't define a person. It's one part of who they are, alongside their personality, interests, relationships, and ambitions.

Why World Cerebral Palsy Day Matters

Over 17 million people worldwide are directly impacted by cerebral palsy. Yet many still face barriers to accessing the right care, education, employment, and social opportunities.

World Cerebral Palsy Day isn't just about raising awareness—it's about taking action. It's about:

  • Challenging assumptions about what people with CP can and can't do

  • Advocating for accessibility in public spaces, workplaces, and communities

  • Celebrating achievements that often go unrecognised

  • Building connections between people, families, and organisations who understand the journey

How We Support People with Cerebral Palsy

At Ashton Care, we've spent over 40 years supporting people with complex needs, including cerebral palsy. Our approach is simple: we focus on what people can do, not what they can't.

That means:

Person-centred care plans – We work with each individual to understand their goals, preferences, and daily routines. Care isn't one-size-fits-all.

Specialist training – Our team includes staff trained in complex care, mobility support, communication aids, and assistive technology. We know how to use equipment like hoists, specialist seating, and communication devices safely and confidently.

Risk-based approach – We don't wrap people in cotton wool. We support them to take positive risks, try new things, and live independently—because that's what dignity looks like.

Consistent care teams – Familiar faces build trust. Our clients work with the same small team of carers who understand their needs, routines, and communication style.

Family partnership – We keep families informed and involved. Whether it's through our online care management system, regular updates, or open-door visits, we make sure everyone's on the same page.

Real Support, Real Lives

We've supported people with cerebral palsy in all our settings—residential care, supported living, and domiciliary care. Some need help with personal care and mobility. Others need support managing medication, attending appointments, or staying connected with their community.

What they all have in common is this: they deserve care that respects their individuality, protects their independence, and helps them live the life they want.

How You Can Get Involved

World Cerebral Palsy Day is a reminder that we all have a role to play in building a more inclusive society. Here's how you can support the cerebral palsy community:

  • Educate yourself – Learn about CP and challenge misconceptions

  • Advocate for accessibility – Push for better access in your local area

  • Support CP charities – Donate, volunteer, or share their work

  • Listen and amplify – Follow people with CP on social media and share their stories

  • Spread the word – Use #WorldCerebralPalsyDay and #UniqueAndUnited to raise awareness

Our Commitment

At Ashton Care, we're proud to support people with cerebral palsy and other complex needs every single day. We're committed to providing care that's flexible, compassionate, and focused on what matters most—helping people live life on their terms.
