Trisomy Awareness Month: practical support for families in West Sussex
26 Mar 2026
At The Ashton Care Group, we support individuals and families across Bognor Regis, Littlehampton, Selsey, Chichester and surrounding West Sussex communities with personalised care at home and supported living.
What does “trisomy” mean?
Trisomy is a genetic condition where a person has an extra copy of a chromosome. The most widely known is Down syndrome (Trisomy 21). Other trisomy conditions include Edwards syndrome (Trisomy 18) and Patau syndrome (Trisomy 13).
Every person is different. Some people will need only light-touch support while others may need more structured, specialist care.
What families often need support with
Families we speak to are usually juggling a mix of practical care, health appointments and long-term planning. Common areas where support can make a real difference include:
· Daily living routines: personal care, dressing, meal support and keeping a consistent structure
· Medication support: prompts, administration and monitoring side effects
· Mobility and safety: moving and handling support, falls prevention and safe home set-ups
· Communication and confidence: patient, familiar carers who understand how your loved one communicates
· Meaningful activity and community connection: reducing isolation and building a sense of purpose
· Family respite: planned breaks that protect carer wellbeing without guilt
How personalised care helps people live well
Good care is not about doing everything for someone. It is about helping them do as much as possible for themselves, safely.
Depending on needs, we can support with:
· Home care in West Sussex: flexible visits that fit around your routine, from companionship to personal care
· Supported living: structured support that builds independence and life skills
· Complex needs support: experienced teams who can work calmly and consistently with higher support requirements
We focus on consistency, clear communication and care plans that reflect the person, not just the diagnosis.
Planning ahead: a simple checklist for families
If you are exploring care options, these questions can help you make a confident decision:
1. What does a good day look like for my loved one and what support makes that possible?
2. What are the non-negotiables (routine, food preferences, communication style, sensory needs)?
3. What risks need managing (mobility, swallowing, medication, anxiety, behaviour, isolation)?
4. Who needs support too (parents, siblings, wider family carers)?
5. What would help in the next 4 weeks, not just “someday”?

For families exploring care options, it can be difficult to judge quality from a brochure or a star rating. One of the most reliable indicators is a provider’s commitment to learning: how staff are trained, how knowledge is refreshed and how improvements are embedded into everyday practice.
