Why NHS 111's 24/7 mental health support matters for our sector

11 Sept 2025

NHS 111 provides comprehensive mental health crisis support, making England one of the first countries to integrate this into a single phone line.

What this service offers:

✅ Trained professionals available 24/7 via 111 (select mental health option)

✅ Immediate crisis assessments and referrals

✅ Reduced inappropriate A&E visits

✅ No more hunting for the right number during a crisis

Real progress in action: As part of the NHS's 10-Year Health Plan, the first 24/7 neighbourhood mental health centre opened in Tower Hamlets, East London. It offers walk-in support without appointments or referrals, staffed around the clock by multidisciplinary teams including psychiatrists, peer support workers, and community services.

Why this matters for care providers:

At Ashton Care Group, we have always provided 24/7 crisis support for our service users with mental health needs. This NHS service means:

- Better coordination between services

- Clearer pathways for families seeking help

- Recognition that mental health crises don't follow office hours

The bigger picture: This represents a fundamental shift - treating mental health emergencies with the same urgency as physical ones. It's about dignity, accessibility, and removing barriers when people need help most.

For families supporting someone with complex mental health needs, having a single, reliable number (111) available 24/7 is transformative.

For families exploring care options, it can be difficult to judge quality from a brochure or a star rating. One of the most reliable indicators is a provider’s commitment to learning: how staff are trained, how knowledge is refreshed and how improvements are embedded into everyday practice.
